This is how we consume – snapshots of our consumer society

The basic idea behind the photo competition and exhibition was the curiosity that drove us to show the characteristics, the everyday situations of our consumer society through the eyes of the consumers themselves.
In the course of representing and displaying the everyday consumer interests, Hungarian Consumer Protection Association has always been seeking the means of communication, which can get our message in an unconventional way through to the not-yet-addressed consumer strata. With the help of National Consumer Protection Authority we could find some kind sponsors whose contribution enabled us to organize the photo competition and exhibition as well as to compile this album.

The competition attracted hundreds of photographs. The ones we considered good enough to be awarded and exhibited splendidly reflect the typical features of our consumer society, its sunny and dark side, its funny, grotesque or stunning characteristics.

Through the lens of the photographer we can see a stereotypically Hungarian way of depiction – a little bit humorous, a little bit realistic, a little bit artistic but always action-focused. Watching the collected works we can recollect memories and atmospheres we believed were long gone, but we must also admit that we find it quite hard to get rid of the recognitions caused by the stigmas that characterize the globalization and the modern consumer
societies – this is how we consume…
