Travelling abroad

 

Leaving the country is a fundamental right of all Hungarian citizens and foreign nationals residing legally in the country is entitled. The right to travel abroad may be only exercised or restricted by law. In addition the Hungarian citizens have the right to travel back home. The right of travelling home can not be denied, neither limited or conditioned. The right to travel abroad is only to be exercised by a valid travel document. It is important to note that the Hungarian national identity card can be used to travel abroad in the European Economic Area, or to travel from one member state to an other. It is also possible to use the ID card instead of the passport, if an international treaty allows it. The most common form of a passport for travel documents (passports ordinary sense of the term). The period of validity mostly depends on the age of the citizens.

 

Validity of the passport:

 

  • under the age of 4: 2 years
  • between the ages of 4 and 18: 5 years
  • Over 18 years: 10 years of validity can be approved, but it is possible to ask for a 5 year validity (this is for those who want to reduce the cost of replacement).
     

The Hungarian citizens are allowed to have only one valid passport at the same time.

 

Practical advices

 

  • Before travelling is worth to ask the embassy for the relevant information about the travelling documents and other requirements of the destination country.
  • The Hungarian national id card can be used to travel abroad in the European Economic Area
